Optima Cycles Optima was founded in 1994 by 2 young dutch engineers Michael van der Meijden and Edoardo Mugge. For a long and demanding bike trip through Australia in 1996 they made the most suitable recumbent for that purpose, a model that became the renowned Condor. From their first outlets in the center of old Dutch Haarlem, Optima moved to the harbour area of the North Sea shore of Ijmuiden where they stayed for over a decade. In 2010 its headquarters moved to Beverwijk, still close to Haarlem. The choice of material for the Optima recumbents was from the beginning headed by the use of oversized tubing of alloy for the allround and race models and stainless steel for the most sturdy ones, the Rider and Condor. At the end of the '90 Optima had one of the greatest range of models in the world, and some bikes got famous among recumbent freaks. The Baron, and its race version the X Low, became and is still a favorite among speed lovers, whilst at the other hand Optima got quite a reputation among world travelers who used the Condor, the Dragon, but also the Orca and Lynxx on heavy duty trips. Pictures speak for itself, no other brand has so many extreme around the world trips immortalized by riders with eye for beauty Optima's philosophy has always been to make bikes without superfluous gadgets and to avoid following temporary hypes; Another strong focus of the brand is to use high-end components, up to nuts and bolts of stainless steel, in one word never finish a bike with cheap ingredients to maintain lower price tags. In the early 2000 Optima was one of the first to have race teams in Europe that were very competitive. The riders of the dutch, belgian and french teams were winners of many events. The names of Sietze de Laeter, Naan Eldering and Vincent Pfister are still to be found among the first places on all events of this period.
